Chesed - Covenant Love

The Hebrew word chesed cannot be reduced to simple affection. It speaks of covenant loyalty—steadfast mercy bound by promise, love that endures because it is rooted in the nature of God Himself.

The Story Behind the Image

This vertical composition reveals the Lion of Judah seated in quiet majesty, His gaze steady and watchful. Light gathers around His face and mane like a soft radiance, set against a deep field of royal purple. Beneath His paw rest pomegranates—ancient symbols of covenant fruitfulness—while the Hebrew word חֶסֶד (chesed) appears in gold as a declaration of God’s enduring love.

Unlike a roaring lion, this Lion rests in calm authority. Scripture describes Judah as a lion who has crouched and settled in strength—secure in victory. His posture is not one of conflict, but of sovereign peace. His rule is already established.

As I worked on this piece, I sensed the Lord revealing His nature not only as King, but as covenant-keeper. His authority is not distant or severe; it is anchored in steadfast mercy. The Lion who reigns is also the One who remains faithful through every generation.

The pomegranates carry their own covenant testimony. They adorned the robes of Israel’s high priest and the pillars of the Temple, symbols of abundance and the richness of God’s promises. Each fruit holds a multitude of seeds—an image of covenant life that multiplies rather than diminishes. Under the Lion’s watch, blessing continues to bear fruit.

The purple background speaks of kingship and divine authority, while the warm light surrounding the Lion suggests the nearness of the Shekinah—the radiant presence of God dwelling among His people.

The Lion is still.

His strength is not restless.

His authority does not waver.

His covenant does not fail.

His chesed remains—steady, faithful, and unbroken.
